I'm just West of that area up in the mountains.
29 Palm and Yucca Valley are desert. Cheap land. Big empty windswept open highway. Joshua Trees, rocks and jackrabbits. Weather: clear, windy, either blazing hot or freezing cold.
The two towns are big enough for markets and movie theaters. The base is down in size so there's a lot of empty store fronts. You still get weekend traffic heading to the River.
Lots of rock climbers and sand people.
The Colorado River is closer than the Pacific Ocean.
Sometimes the earth shakes but we have12 months of good riding weather.
Also: Sales tax and State Income tax.
Couple of Hours to Laughlin or Vegas
Gas is $1.38/gallon. Food is moderate. Everything else, a bit pricey.
I think you'll love it.
